Loss On Heating / Thin Film Oven

Specification : This dual purpose oven is designed to determine the loss in weight of bitumen and flux oils (Loss on Heating test) and the effect of heat and air on Asphaltic materials (Thin Film test). The unit is heavily insulated and has a double glass door for viewing the test chamber thermometer and samples. Temperature is controlled at 163° C ± 1° C by means of a variable temperature controller and thermostat. Two rotating platforms are supplied with each oven: One accepts 9 standard penetration cups for the loss on heating test, the other accepts two 140mm diameter test pans for the thin film test. The platforms are rotated at 5 to 6 rpm by an external motor.

Specification : A Stripping Value Apparatus is used to measure the stripping value of bituminous (asphalt) mixes, which indicates how well bitumen adheres to aggregate particles in the presence of water. The apparatus features a circular tray that rotates at about 100 rpm, holding four 400cc bottles at a 90-degree angle with their openings facing the tray's center. Samples of the bituminous mix are placed in the bottles and agitated for 15 minutes to simulate moisture-induced stripping. The percentage of stripped aggregate is then determined by visual inspection.

Components and Operation :

Motor and Tray: An electrically driven geared motor rotates a circular tray in a vertical plane.

Bottles: Four 400cc bottles are mounted on the tray at a 90-degree angle to each other, with their openings directed toward the center of the tray.

Time Switch: A time switch is included to ensure consistent agitation times.

Sample Placement: The bituminous mix samples are placed inside the bottles.

Agitation: The apparatus agitates the samples for approximately 15 minutes.

Visual Inspection: After agitation, the samples are removed, and the percentage of stripped aggregate (dislodged bitumen) is estimated visually.
